How Long Do Laptops Last Before You Need to Replace Them?

There are several different factors that will determine how long you can use a laptop before it either becomes obsolete or unusable for your needs.

  1. Specific hardware inside the laptop
  2. Types of tasks for which laptops will be used.
  3. How to treat a laptop

Let’s talk a little bit more about each of these three points.

A Laptop’s Hardware Will Determine How Long it Will Remain Relevant

The key to determining the average age of a laptop is the type of hardware (components) inside the laptop.

The better the processor, and graphics card (if you’re gaming), and the more RAM and storage the laptop has, the more suitable it will be for modern tasks.

So, basically, the more you spend on a laptop, the more you should expect it to work.

A common misconception about how long a laptop will last is based on the price you pay for it:

  • Less than $700: 2-4 years
  • $700-$1,000: 3-5 years
  • $1,000 or more: 4-7 years

This, again, is a common misconception you might expect from a new laptop (depending on age). The types of ways you use your laptop will play an important role in determining how long your laptop lasts.

The Tasks You Need Your Laptop to Perform Will Determine How Long it Remains Relevant

The more work you need to do with your laptop (such as gaming, video editing, graphics design, etc.) the less time it will be relevant.

On the other hand, the less demanding work you need to do with your laptop (email, web browsing, watching videos, etc.), the more viable the option will be.

So, really, the question is how long the laptop should last because it depends on both A) the type of hardware inside it, and B) what you are using it for.

A mid-range laptop may last 4-5 years, however, give or take a year or two depending on how you use it.

The second thing to consider is how you treat your laptop so far.

The Better Care You Take of Your Laptop, the Longer it Will Last

In 2009 I got a new laptop for about $ 800. I used my laptop primarily for web browsing, email, watching videos and some casual gaming.

Laptops are no longer usable until 2012.

Why? Because the charging jack was completely shot.

And, the reason the charging jack was completely shot was because I always cheated the laptop. I continuously disregard to unplug the charger after coming to the complete battery life.

Laptops were still fine for things like web browsing, sending emails and watching videos. (However, it wasn’t until 2012 that it became really viable for casual gaming.)

But his age was reduced because I did not take care of him.

If I had managed the charging process better I could have easily gotten two more years out of it (for basic tasks).

So, if you want to extend the life of your laptop, make sure that you take good care of it. Below is a list of things you can do to make sure your laptop is in good condition.

How to prolong the life of your laptop.

  1. When your laptop is fully charged, unplug the charging cable.
  2. Use a laptop cooling pad to help with low temperatures.

  5. Upgrade your laptop where possible (add more RAM, or SSD)

Common tasks such as sending emails, using word processors, browsing the internet, and watching videos, even a budget laptop should run for at least 4-5 years (unless you take good care of it). put it).

However, if you are a gamer, the more demanding nature of playing video games means that you should expect a minimum age for your laptop, at least in terms of its ability to play modern games.

As time goes on, modern games progress in graphics and complexity and, as a result, require better hardware to run.

Therefore, a mid-range gaming laptop can only run for a few years a before it has difficulty playing new games.

Of course, the more you spend on your gaming laptop now, the more you should expect it to be able to handle new games.

But, from a general point of view, you can use the following to help you determine how long a gaming laptop should last:

  • Less than $700: 2-3 years
  • $700-$1,500: 3-4 years
  • $1,500 or more: 4-6 years

This, of course, is a very common idea of the average age of gaming laptops. Another factor that comes into play is what you expect from your in-game experience.

If you just like to play your games on the top graphics settings, you’ll want to upgrade to a newer and better laptop soon.

If you don’t mind playing games on lower graphics settings, you can probably take two more years off your laptop.
